Avenue of the Giants Camping and Bike Ride August 11-14, 2008
Patrick, Joe and I are meeting at the Humboldt Redwoods State Park
in mid August (next week). This is the site of the Avenue of the Giants Redwood Grove. It was also where Joe and
Patrick completed their first marathon, and where I ran my second marathon. This was back in 1978 or 79, a loooong time
ago. None of us no longer run. Biking is easier on the joints and you get to see more.
Anyway, we'll
be here for about 4 days, bike riding, camping, and doing touristy things. Should be fun, we should get some long bike
rides in, getting ready for Cycle Oregon next month.
I'll have some pictures and daily entries early next week.
August 18, 2008. We had a great time. Managed to get in about 25 miles of bike riding each day.
We visited Eureka, Arcadia and Ferndale. Ferndale is very clean, the people friendly, has a slew of Ginger Bread Victorian
Homes and good restaurants. We had lunch at Papa Joes, "The Best Food in Town". I ordered the club sandwich
with a cup of homemade chicken soup. Waitress asked if I wanted Oyster Crackers with the soup. Patrick said "you
better give him some, he can't get those at home". She brought me five packs, 4 to take home.
We
had dinner at Roys in Eureka one night, a very good Italian Restaurant. The other nights we cooked at the camp site.
Steaks the first night and chicken the next.
We also managed to get three morning bike rides in, about 25 miles
each day. The first day I picked a hilly route, at one point Joe's computer indicated that we were grinding up a
13% grade. (Too much information Joe!). It was a fun trip, we are getting ready for the Cycle Oregon Ride
next month, which should be challenging.
